Upfitted Dodge Ram Promaster 2500, long wheel base (159)/High roof. 3L diesel engine w/ 250 HP, 5,100 lb towing capacity. Incredible fuel economy for such a large and heavy vehicle: about 21 mpg and >500 mi range on a full tank (Brother’s truck + camper can’t come close!!) Currently 119,400 mi with routine maintenance; this diesel engine will outperform and outlast gas counterparts (ref commercial fleet vehicles with up to 400K).
My Wife and I upfitted this cargo van into an extremely functional and comfortable camper van. We’ve enjoyed the building process as much as the actual utilization of it. Having a van completely changes how we’re able to travel; hiking, biking and ski trips are so much easier when you don’t have to set up a tent or rent an Air BNB! It’s also a great home-base for tailgating parties. Our goal was to maximize functionality and comfort with uncomplicated simplicity.
Here is a basic list of the modifications we’ve made:
Waterproof and durable flooring.
Beautiful beetle-kill pine walls (insulated) with anchor points and collapsible hooks.
Convertible seat to slide-out bed (Ikea mattress with storage space underneath and beside (just under full size, but enough for 2 humans and 2 dogs!). In our opinion and others’ we have talked to, our layout (sliding futon) is better than the other popular lofted style in allowing for more space.
Closet with 3 other shelves for storage and housing electrical system. Electrical system: 100W 12V Renogy solar panel and charge controller, 100 amphr AMG sealed battery, 12V AC/DC inverter w/ 4 usb and 2 outlets.
Overhead cabinets for storage.
Kitchenette area with cooler and storage space below and fancy stone backsplash.
Ceiling (insulated) with recessed low-energy LED lights with switch and dimmer and ventilation fan.
EXTREMELY functional seats and storage with collapsible table for eating, etc. with racks for skis and poles. This is also a unique design that saves space and allows us to eat meals out of reach of marauding dog noses!
Magnetized REFLECTIX window covers for privacy and temperature regulation.
Additionally, the storage/seat, kitchenette and bed are all removable which has come in handy when the capabilities of an actual cargo van are needed (eg. Helping friends move/helping friends set-up for a wedding/doing bike shuttles).
Please call to arrange a time to come see it in person; the pictures don’t do it justice until you set foot inside.
NOTE: we are not professional van builders but took great care and were extremely thoughtful throughout the build of this van. It took many hours of not only construction but meticulous planning and design. That being said, I can’t hope to compare to some of the pro companies out there, but dollar per dollar, I think we are on par and this is a great deal for excellent functionality without breaking the bank. We chose not to install a refrigerator or water system to keep things simple, and have found that a water jug and cooler (60 L RTIC) is very effective. We also use a propane stove and heater and have got along very well. These choices were made to keep things simple, but if they were something you wanted it would not be hard to do and you would absolutely come in under the price of other vans that have these. And if those things aren’t a priority for you, well then, you’ve cut out and saved extraneous cost and complexity!
