Oregon, United States of America
My wife and I arrived in Portland, Oregon, from Australia in September 2018 for a 12 month road trip throughout the US and Canada. We purchased this van as a basic cargo van and spent the next 7 weeks converting it into the camper you see pictured.
During the next 10 months, we explored over 20,000 miles of the United States and Canada. Our van (affectionately known as Rudy) has allowed us to experience so much of the rich beauty this country has to offer; from deserts, to mountains and valleys, rivers, snowy passes, grassy plains and so much more! We’ve seen it all and Rudy has provided incredible comfort and dependability during this time.
The way we’ve designed the van and the features we’ve included (which we’ve listed below) make it feel like a cosy home on wheels! Sadly our 12 months is almost up and it’s nearing the time for us to head home, which is why we’re selling our beloved Rudy.
The reason the list price is so low is because we have recently experienced some problems with the van overheating as we’ve driven north through California. We took the van to an auto repair shop for a thorough diagnostic on July 31st, 2019 which revealed the head gasket is showing some wear. Although the car drives well in most cases, because the head gasket is on its way out, it overheats when placed under load (i.e. driving up steep inclines). Ideally we would have loved to get this fixed before selling the van for the convenience of the next owner (and to get the full value of the sale), but unfortunately we won’t have time to do so before we fly home to Australia.
Knowing this issue and given the purpose of the van, we have subtracted the price of the repair work (plus a some for what we’re calling the inconvenience fee!) required to return it to its adventure-ready condition from the overall value of the camper.
We have contacted a number of reputable auto repair shops whose estimates to fix the head gasket issue range from min $3,000 to max $4,000 USD. We were supplied with extensive reporting by the auto repair shop that diagnosed the problem (see here) so you’re equipped with all the information you need to engage a mechanic (or do the work yourself).
As we are returning to Australia in a few weeks and can’t take everything we purchased new for the van, we’ll be selling it with all the base equipment you’ll need to start your adventure, which we’ve detailed below.
